Rachin Ravindra: A Rising Star in Cricket
New Zealand born Rachin is a left-handed batsman and slow left-arm orthodox bowler has carved a niche for himself in the cricketing world.
Ravindra’s formal cricket journey began with his inclusion in the New Zealand U-19 squad. At just 16 years old, Rachin created history by becoming the youngest New Zealand cricketer to participate in the 2016 ICC U-19 World Cup held in Bangladesh.
He represented Under-15 at the age of 12. By the time he was 13, he was already a part of Under-17 team.
His performance was so impressive that he was also selected for the 2018 U-19 World Cup. The International Cricket Council (ICC) recognized his potential and named him as the rising star of the squad.
Domestic Career:
In 2018, Rachin’s cricket career took a leap forward when he was awarded a contract with Wellington for the 2018–19 season. His List A debut came soon after for New Zealand A against Pakistan A on October 21, 2018. He made 11 and went wicket-less that day.
His first-class debut for New Zealand A against Pakistan A on November 30, 2018, was another significant milestone in his cricket career. He scored a commendable total of 97 run (70 runs in first and 27 in the second innings) in his debut match.
On January 27, 2019, he played his first T20 against Otago, where he didn’t get the chance to bat but took three important wickets in his bowling.
International Career of Rachin:
The year 2021 was a landmark year in Rachin Ravindra’s cricket career. He made his T20I debut on September 1, 2021, against Bangladesh. Although he couldn’t make a significant impression in his debut match with bat but indeed got Shakib Al Hasan out. It was just the beginning of his journey in international cricket.
Later, he made his Test debut against India in November 2021 under the captaincy of Kane Williamson. In this match, he showed remarkable resilience, along with Ajaz Patel, and played out 91 deliveries to remain unbeaten on 18, guiding New Zealand to a draw.
His ODI debut came later on March 25, 2023 against Sri Lanka. He missed a half-century on his debut, as he got out on 49 in the match.
In his World Cup debut against England in 2023, Rachin Ravindra scored an unbeaten 123 off just 93 deliveries, including 11 boundaries and five sixes. This performance etched his name in the record books as the youngest New Zealander to score a century in the Cricket World Cup and only the fourth Kiwi to hit a ton on his World Cup debut.
He scored 578 runs and took 5 wickets in the tournament. However, New Zealand did not make it to the final as they lost to India in the semi-final at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.
Later, in 2024, Rachin scored his first Test century against South Africa. In fact, he scored a double hundred (240) in the match before getting bowled out by Neil Brand. His first test hundred came only in his fourth test match.
