MD Thirushkamini Biography – The first Indian woman cricketer to score a century in a world cup match!
Family Background and Early Life:
MD Thirush Kamini was born on July 30, 1990, in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. Her father Murugesan Dickeshwashankar is a former hockey player and also her initial cricket coach. Her mother passed away when she was 18.
She has a sister MD Sugaragamini, also a cricketer, and currently playing for Tamil Nadu. She’s also an A-level Coach at BCCI ‘s certified cricket academy.
Kamini did her schooling from Sacred Heart Church Park School and completed her college from M.O.P. Vaishnav College for Women. She also holds the post-degree of M.Phil from the Madras University.
When she was too young, she used to watch cricket with her father. Then, at the age of 8, she even started playing cricket. Later, she started training with her father due to the lack of coaching facilities in her city.
Soon, she represented Tamil Nadu in Under-16 at the age of 8. Later, at the age of 10, she played senior-level cricket for Tamil Nadu. In an interview, she revealed that “I once played so good in a match that my coach rewarded me ₹10 for my performance”.
At the age of 15, Thirush played the U-21 Young Women Tournament, where she won the Player of the Match award against Pakistan.

Thirushkamini’s Cricket Career:
At the age of 16, MD Thirushkamini made her ODI debut in the very first match of the 2006 Women’s Asia Cup against Pakistan. She opened up with Sulakshana Naik and scored 22 runs with 4 boundaries. In the second innings of the match, she took 2 most important and a total of 3 wickets. Her stats were- 10 overs, 19 runs, 3 wickets, and a maiden.
Later in the 3rd match of the Asia cup, she won player of the match award along with S Naik against Srilanka. The duo chased down the score of 145 runs without losing their wickets.
At the end of the Asia cup, Thirushkamini won the player of the series award along with Srilanka’s Dedunu Silva. She took a total of 8 wickets (most in the tournament) and scored 135 runs in 5 matches.
In 2010, she got injured during the home series against England.
Kamini did her comeback at the 2013 ICC Women’s World Cup. In the very first match of the World Cup, she scored the brilliant hundred against West Indies. With that inning, “Thirush Kamini became the first Indian woman to score a century in a Women’s World Cup match”. She scored a total of 100 runs in 146 balls and won the player of the match award.
On February 10, 2017, she made her second ODI ton against Ireland in a World Cup qualifier match. With 11 fours and 4 sixes, she scored a total of 113 runs in 146 balls and also won the player of the match award for her brilliant innings.
T20I & Test career:
T20Is-
On October 28, 2008, Kamini made her T20 International debut against Australia where she scored just 11 runs before getting stumped out. In her 3rd T20I match, against Bangladesh, Kamini made her first T20I fifty with 7 fours at a strike rate of 98.24.
Tests-
In 2014, MD Thirushkamini with Harmanpreet Kaur and 6 other Indian players made their Test debut against England. In her debut match, she scored 17 in the first innings and 28 runs (114 balls) in second innings.
On November 16, 2014, only in her second Test match, she scored 192 runs against South Africa. Thirush Kamini took 430 balls for the second-highest score in a Test match by an Indian after Mithali Raj. She hits 24 fours and a six in the innings.
