Bhawana Kanth was born on December 1, 1992, in Barauni, a town in the Begusarai district of Bihar, India.

Kanth grew up in a supportive family, with her father, Tej Narayan Kanth, working as an electrical engineer at Indian Oil Corporation, while her mother, Radha Kanth, managed the household.
She also has two siblings, a younger sister, Tanuja, and a brother, Nilambar Kanth.
Education:
For her early education, Bhawana attended DAV School in Barauni before moving to Kota, Rajasthan, for her intermediate studies.
During this time, she began preparing for engineering entrance exams. While exploring career options, she considered joining the National Defence Academy.
However, at that time, women were not allowed to enroll, which led her to reconsider her path.

Bhawana’s Journey from Bihar to The Indian Air Force:
Bhawana qualified for the Indian Air Force (IAF) through the Short Service Commission examination. She was later commissioned into the first batch of women fighter pilots of the IAF in June 2016, alongside Mohana Singh and Avani Chaturvedi.
In November 2017, she joined a Fighter Squadron, marking another significant milestone in her career.

On March 16, 2018, Kanth completed her first solo flight in a MiG-21 Bison from Ambala Air Force Station, demonstrating her growing expertise as a fighter pilot.
Further solidifying her place in history, on May 22, 2019, Bhawana Kanth became the first Indian woman fighter pilot to undertake daytime combat missions on a fighter aircraft.

She successfully completed her day operational syllabus as a fighter pilot on the MiG-21 Bison aircraft, a jet that has been serving the Indian Air Force (IAF) since 1964.
Marking this achievement, the IAF stated, “Flight Lieutenant Bhawana Kanth is the first woman fighter pilot to be qualified to undertake operations by day on a fighter aircraft.”

Continuing to break barriers, on January 26, 2021, Bhawana became the first Indian woman fighter pilot to participate in the Republic Day parade.
She was then stationed at Rajasthan’s Nal Airbase. As of 2025, she is operating from a base in the Western sector and has been flying the Sukhoi-30MKI aircraft since 2021.
